Master the Solo: Ace Frehley’s Emotional, String Bending Licks to Add Flair to Your Songs

For guitarists, the solo is a crucial part of any song. It’s the moment when all of the elements of the song come together and can create an emotional response within the audience. But, it can also be a challenging part of the song to learn. Today I’m going to break down a solo that you can use for your next song.

For this solo, we’re going to be playing in E Minor Pentatonic. We’ll begin by bending the 14th fret of the third string up a whole step, so you’ll want to use your first, middle and third fingers on the 12th, 13th and 14th frets respectively. After that bend, you’ll want to hit the 12th frets on the second, first and second strings. This will result in a Chuck Berry-esque lick.

Next, you’ll want to move to the 15th fret of the second string and pluck it twice. You’ll then bend it up a whole step. This time, you’ll only need to use your third finger.

Now, you’ll want to do some reverse bends. This means picking the string as you bend it up and then letting it drop. You’ll want to do three of these reverse bends.

To finish off the solo, you’ll want to move to the second fret of the third string and do a hammer-on from the 12th fret to the 14th fret and back down to the 12th fret. Then you’ll want to bend the 14th fret twice. If you know how to do vibrato, you can also add a little vibrato on the end.

This solo is a great way to add a bit of flair to your song and make it stand out from the rest. It’s also a great way to practice your bending and reverse bending skills. So, try it out the next time you’re writing a song and see how it fits in.
