Discover Absolute Fretboard Mastery: Learn to Create Music on Guitar – Steve Stine

Hi everyone, Steve Stine here from Lesson Face and welcome back to my blog.

This month, I want to talk to you about something I think is really important for guitarists to understand—putting everything together into one thought process and onto the fretboard. It’s not enough to just understand the concepts and techniques, you also need to be able to use them to create music.

When I think about creating music as a guitarist, I think about having a particular chord that’s being played and then deciding what my available options are. A lot of people just automatically go to the minor pentatonic scale of that chord, but sometimes you want to go with the major pentatonic scale, or even expand the pentatonic to create a diatonic sound.

For many years, I found myself moving around the fretboard without really creating any kind of music. I knew how to play shapes and licks, but I wasn’t making any kind of thematic music. That’s when I realized it was time to start working in layers.

The first layer is the pentatonic scale, which can be either major or minor depending on the chord being played. Then, you can expand that pentatonic scale to create diatonic sounds. Once you’ve got the basics of the pentatonic and diatonic scales covered, you can start getting into more advanced concepts like the CAGED system.

The CAGED system is all about understanding how the chords within a key relate to each other and how they connect together on the fretboard. It’s a great way to start understanding the fretboard better and to learn how to use the pentatonic and diatonic scales to create a more musical sound.

So, as guitarists, it’s important to understand the different concepts and techniques we use on the guitar and how to move between them in order to create music. Start with the pentatonic scales, expand to the diatonic scales, and then move on to more advanced concepts like the CAGED system. Before you know it, you’ll be playing more musical solos and creating great music on the guitar.
